ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
SOMNU-STAR Ph® is a bacteria-free acellular suspension comprised of three components. The first is a bacterial-free
suspension of outer membrane proteins extracted from growing cultures of H. somnus. The second is
comprised of surface material extracted from growing cultures of Pasteurella haemolytica A1. The third component
is a genetically attenuated leukotoxin of P. haemolytica produced by recombinant DNA technology. These
components are combined with the proprietary adjuvant, VSA-3. Gentamycin is added as a preservative.
INDICATIONS
For vaccination of healthy cattle and calves as an aid in the prevention of diseases caused by H. somnus and
P. haemolytica. This subunit vaccine stimulates the formation of antibodies against the bacterial cells of both
H. somnus and P. haemolytica as well as antibodies which neutralize the natural leukotoxin of P. haemolytica.
DOSAGE and ADMINISTRATION
Primary Vaccination
Administer a single 2 mL dose subcutaneously in the neck in healthy cattle. A single dose of the P. haemolytica
subunit component of the vaccine is required to confer active immunity. A booster dose is recommended when-ever
subsequent exposure or stress is expected.
A booster vaccination for H. somnus should be administered two to six weeks after the initial vaccination. Annual
revaccination of mature animals is recommended. Calves vaccinated prior to six months of age should be
revaccinated after six months of age.
In calves destined for a feedlot, the greatest benefit is obtained when the first dose is administered two to six
weeks prior to feedlot entry.
PRECAUTIONS
Store at 2°- 7°C (35°- 45°F). Do not freeze. Shake well before use. Use entire contents when opened. In the event
of anaphylaxis, administer epinephrine. Do not vaccinate animals within 60 days before slaughter. Subcutaneous
vaccination may cause transient injection site swelling. On some animals this may persist for several weeks. For
veterinary use only.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Haemophilus somnus antigens are designed to prevent the multi-faceted disease complex caused by
H. somnus infection. The most common sites of infection are the heart, lungs, joints, and brain. In unvaccinated
cattle and calves these infections result in clinical signs including sudden death, pneumonia, myocarditis,
pleuritis, arthritis, and infectious thrombotic meningoencephalitis (ITEME) lameness and signs associated with
infection of the central nervous system (blindness, staggering, inability to stand.) H. somnus has been isolated
from the reproductive organs of male and female cattle and may contribute to infertility and reproductive failure.
P. haemolytica is an important cause of shipping fever or bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in cattle and other
forms of calfhood pneumonia in calves. Clinical signs of the disease include difficult breathing, nasal discharge,
reduced feed intake, fever, rapid pulse rate and death. P. haemolytica is a normal organism found in the nasopharynx
which increases in numbers rapidly when animals are stressed such as shipping, changes in weather and viral
infections. The rapid increase in P. haemolytica organisms lead to deposition in the lungs, P. haemolytica grow
rapidly and produce a leukotoxin which incapacitates leukocytes. When the bacterium is engulfed by a weakened
leukocyte, the leukocyte is unable to destroy the bacterium, allowing the P. haemolytica to produce leukotoxin
which kills the leukocyte. The dying leukocyte releases enzymes which further damage the lung tissue resulting
in further necrosis of lung tissue characteristic of shipping fever.
