SCOUR BOS®

Scours, or diarrhea, is a common result of intestinal viral and bacterial infections in baby calves. Calves are especially vulnerable because their immune systems have not yet developed and they face many stresses in the first few days of life. The bacteria and viruses that cause calf scours are commonly found in the manure of healthy cows, so most calves are exposed shortly after birth. Infected calves multiply the infectious agents and become the source of infection for other newborn calves.

  • Coronavirus causes one of the most severe viral diarrheas in newborn calves worldwide. The virus is also able to infect lung tissues and may cause pneumonia. Calves most commonly affected are about five to 21 days of age.
  • Rotavirus diarrhea is also found worldwide. Calves are most commonly affected in the first two weeks of life.
  • E. coli bacteria commonly affect calves in the first few days of life, and may cause severe diarrhea.
  • Clostridium perfringens Type C is commonly found in soil, as well as the intestinal tract of healthy animals. It can result in severe toxemia and high mortality rates. Calves may be found dead without showing any symptoms.

Preventing scours depends on management of the dam’s nutrition, the environment and the calf. An important step in calf scour prevention is immunization of the dam with an effective vaccine. This will result in a high level of maternal antibodies passed from dam to calf via the colostrum.

With Scour Bos you can help reduce the risk of scours caused by E. coli, bovine rotavirus, bovine coronavirus, and Clostridium perfringens Type C.

Shake well before using. Administer 2 mL of Scour Bos 9 intramuscularly in the neck of pregnant heifers and cows eight to 16 weeks prior to calving. Revaccinate with Scour Bos 4, four weeks prior to calving. Revaccinate annually with one dose of Scour Bos 9, eight to 10 weeks prior to each subsequent calving.
