Administration

Give Lopatol to the fasting dog in the morning at the same time as about ¼ of the daily food ration; give the rest of the ration in the evening. Abundant drinking water should be made available.

Routine Treatment Schedule

Pups: Can be dewormed at the age of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks in view of the danger of re-infection by ascarids.
Adult Dogs: Deworming once or twice a year as prescribed by the veterinarian.
Breeding Bitches: Treat after mating and shortly before and 4 weeks after whelping.
Kennels: Because of the increased infection risk, it is recommended that all dogs in breeding kennels be dewormed 4 to 6 times a year.

Toxicology

Acute LD50 values
Mouse: 3177 mg / kg
Rat: 3503 mg / kg
Rabbit: 10,000 mg / kg

Signs of acute toxicity are sedation, dyspnea, exophthalmos, curved position and ruffled fur. No organ changes were seen.

Twenty cross-bred dogs, eleven males / nine females, were treated up to 2000 mg/kg. Some of the dogs given 500 mg /kg or more vomited after treatment, and all dogs showed some general depression and inappetence for 48 hours after the treatment. No dogs died as a result of the treatments. In clinical chemistry tests carried out, no correlation was found between deviation from control values and treatment rate.

Chronic Study

Six beagle cross-bred puppies, four male and two female, were used in this study. An initial dose of 200 mg / kg at the age of three weeks, and 26 subsequent two weekly doses at the rate of 100 mg / kg were administered. No symptoms of toxicity were observed in the treated dogs (4/6). Seven quantitative parameters were examined, and no significant changes were observed which could be related to the chemical treatment. When the dogs had reached maturity, sperm mobility tests gave no indication of abnormalities. The bitches were joined by treated dogs and have produced normal progeny.

Reproduction Studies

Lopatol did not have any toxic effect on pregnant bitches or their litters apart from a slight increase in some individual enzyme levels.

No clinical symptoms of toxicity or abortion were observed and all bitches receiving Lopatol delivered healthy puppies at the end of their normal gestation period.

Contraindications

As with other vermicides, Lopatol should not be administered to severely debilitated animals.

Warnings

Keep out of reach of children.

Adverse Reactions

Vomiting that may occur has no negative influence on the efficacy of Lopatol Tablets.

Precautions

Lopatol should not be administered concomitantly with other anthelmintics.
